The Story Behind Suncatcher Swim

The Story Behind Suncatcher Swim

Why I Created a Sustainable Swimwear Brand

My name is Alyssa, the founder of Suncatcher Swim! From a young age, I have always wanted to make a difference. I was the kid in fourth grade that spent my recess picking up trash off the playground, and in college, when my apartment didn’t recycle I would drive my recyclables to other places that did.

Sustainability has always been close to my heart, but it wasn't until the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic that I realized just how much I wanted to do something about it and work to create change.

I have always loved the ocean, lounging by the pool, and spending my days in the sun. I knew that I wanted to create something that not only embraced this love, but also gave back to the environment and inspired others to do the same.

I studied fashion merchandising in college and the idea for Suncatcher Swim was born out of a desire to create comfortable, high-quality swimwear with an emphasis on sustainability. As I learned more about the fashion industry's environmental impact, particularly the waste produced by fast fashion and synthetic fabrics, I knew that I had to step in.

Suncatcher Swim is my way of combining my passion for the ocean, sustainability, and fashion into one brand that can inspire others to make more conscious choices and purchases. It is this reason that I am so excited about building this brand and sharing the importance of sustainability with others in a fun way.

Turning Passion into Purpose

The turning point for me happened in college on a trip to Florida visiting my grandparents, where I saw firsthand how pollution was affecting the ocean and its wildlife.

There was trash in the water and on the beach and while it made me sad, it also fueled my determination to create a solution. I couldn't ignore the fact that the fashion industry, which I was studying, was contributing to the problem.

The fashion industry, especially fast fashion, is responsible for 10% of total global carbon emissions. It is also estimated that synthetic fibers release up to 500,000 tons of microfibers into the ocean each year, which is equivalent to 50 billion plastic bottles.

As I looked into the world of swimwear, I realized that there was an opportunity to make a real change. Most swimwear is made from synthetic fabrics including nylon, polyester, and spandex for their durability, stretch, and quick-drying properties.

While these fabric properties are necessary for swimwear, they often have a significant environmental cost, especially when they are produced in mass quantities to meet the needs of consumers.

That's why I decided to create Suncatcher Swim, a brand that could be part of the solution instead of the problem.

Building a Brand

Sourcing eco-friendly materials, finding an ethical manufacturer, and crafting designs that were both beautiful and functional were top priority. The swimwear industry has long since relied on synthetic, plastic-based fabrics, so finding alternatives that didn't sacrifice quality was essential for Suncatcher Swim.

Through hard work and collaboration with like-minded individuals, Suncatcher Swim came to life. Not only do we prioritize ethical manufacturing processes, but I am proud to say that each piece we create is made with recycled fabrics, which helps keep plastic bottles and fishing nets out of the ocean. We are proving that sustainability and quality can go hand in hand.

The Story Behind Our Name

It took a while to find the perfect name for our brand. I wanted a name that reflected not just our mission, but one that evoked feelings of warmth, optimism, and joy. I spent weeks brainstorming, searching for something that would resonate with our goal to create beautiful, earth-conscious pieces that make people feel good inside and out.

I consulted with my friends and family members and nothing felt quite right until my grandma suggested "Suncatcher Swim," and suddenly it all made sense. Suncatchers have always symbolized light, hope, and positive energy which is exactly what I want this brand to represent.

Just as suncatchers capture and reflect light in beautiful ways, every piece we create is a small reflection of our commitment to a brighter, more sustainable future.

The Suncatcher Swim Mission

At Suncatcher Swim, our mission is simple: to make beautiful swimwear for everybody that doesn't cost the health of our planet.  With the use of eco-friendly and compostable packaging, we are committed to reducing waste and using recycled materials when possible.

Creating change takes more than just a product, it takes a movement. That's why we believe in empowering our customers to be part of the solution. When you choose Suncatcher Swim, you are not just choosing a swimsuit, you are investing in a sustainable future.

The Future of Suncatcher Swim

The journey doesn’t stop here. I am so excited for the future of Suncatcher Swim and I am committed to finding innovative solutions in the world of sustainable fashion.

While there might not yet be a perfect solution, my vision for the brand is to continue growing, to collaborate with other eco-conscious brands, to give back to the community, and to support ocean conservation efforts in a meaningful way.

More than anything, I want Suncatcher Swim to inspire others. If my story can spark even one person to take action, whether that's choosing sustainable fashion, reducing waste, avoiding single-use plastic, and supporting eco-friendly brands, then I will consider this journey a success.
